James Gordon BENNETT was born in 1847 in Charleston, South Carolina, to
• Christopher G. BENNETT (born about 1808 in St. Lukes Parish, Beaufort District, South Carolina, died after 1860 when he was a printer in Savannah) &
Thurza Ann BRANTLEY (born 1810-1815 in Chatham County Georgia, married 1832, died 1865).

In September of 1850, James Gordon BENNETT was 4 years old, living in his parents' household in the 3rd Ward of Charleston, South Carolina.

By June of 1860, James G. BENNETT was age 15 and a millwright, living in the household of his parents in Savannah. The census record indicates that all of the children were born in Charleston, South Carolina (the youngest in 1854).

James G. Bennett (served under the alias of J.G. Huggins - claimed to have run away from home and enlisted at Richmond, Virginia, under this alias; it is not clear if, after his return home on furlough, whether he enlisted in the Navy under his original surname of Bennett or his assumed name of Huggins), born Charleston, South Carolina, 1847; moved to Georgia as an infant, with his parents; joined company K, Cobb's Legion of Cavalry, at Richmond, Virginia in the fall of 1862 or early 1863; wounded in action at Brandy Station, June, 1863; sent home to Savannah on furlough and enlisted there, or was transferred to the Confederate States Navy, December 31, 1864; served as landsman aboard CSS Sampson, Savannah squadron; surrendered at Augusta, Georgia, at the end of the war; post war occupation, carpenter; married Mary R. In 1864, the reorganizing militia enrollment lists include Mr. BENNET, age 19, an engineer, born in Georgia, living in the 1st Militia District, Savannah, Chatham County.

In June of 1870, Jas. BENNETT, a Rail Road Car Builder, age 24, & his wife, Lizzie, age 25 and born in Georgia, were living in the houshold of another Car Builder in Savannah.

In June of 1880, James BENNETT, a policeman age 33, his wife Elizabeth, 34, and their son, James, 8, were boarding with James' sister, Harriet HINELY, age 40, a widow keeping a boarding house at 16 Gordon Street in Savannah.

In 1882, James G. BENNETT was a carpenter for the S.F.&W. Railway, boarding at 208 Wayne Street.

In 1897 in Chatham County, James Gordon BENNETT married Rosa May MCGUIRE (born about 1877 in Georgia of an Irish father, she died in 1934).

In April of 1910, James G. BENNETT, a railroad worker, age 63, was living at 511 Gordon Street with his wife, Mary R., age 33, with their four children, Harriet C., 11, Martha H. 10, Earnest N., 5, and John McG. 3, and James' sister, Mary J., 78.

Abstract from Laurel Grove Cemetery Keepers Book: James G. BENNETT died the 20th [sic] of December, 1916, and was buried on the 23rd in Lot 278. He was a native of South Carolina, aged 65 years, and was a resident of 724 East Anderson Street.
