George Bender Sr. served during the last year of the Revolutionary War in the Lancaster County, Pennsylvania Militia, at the age of sixteen. During the 1780's and 1790's, he served in the militia of Bedford and Somerset Counties, and saw action along the Ohio frontier during the Indian troubles of those times. Later he enlisted with his son David in a regiment which fought in the War of 1812.
