DSENIS, Marian "Penny" Penland--Age 82, a resident of Winston, Oregon, passed away suddenly at her home on November 8, 2003.
She was born on March 30, 1921, in Los Angeles, California, to parents, Paul and Maud (Speir) Penland. Penny developed her life long love of reading books while her mother, Maud worked at the Hollywood Bookstore and Art Shop on Hollywood Boulevard.
From 1937 to 1941 she attended Knox School in Cooperstown, New York. In 1940, Penny and her mother, Maud, drove their 1936 Olds Coupe across the country.
Penny met her husband, Harold at a homecoming dance in Berkeley, California, in 1941. They married on November 26, 1942, and recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.
They first lived in Altadena, California, and then Laguna Beach, California, before moving to Olalla, Oregon, in 1971, settling in Winston in 1987.
She worked as a legal and engineering secretary in Pasadena, California, and as a placement officer for the California Department of Human Resources in Santa Ana, California from 1957 to 1971. Penny worked for the Douglas County Library System from 1973 to 1983. She was very active in civic organizations and volunteering, which included the Roseburg Chapter of AARP, where she was past president in 1988 and 1991, Upper Olalla Ladies Club from 1971 until 2003 where she was past president in 1973 and 1974, Winston-Dillard Seniors where she was past president in 1991 and 1992, RSVP Advisory Council from 1990 to 1994, Winston Library Board Member since 1984, Winston-Dillard Area Chamber of Commerce, RUOK, and Visitor Information Center Volunteer. Penny was the Winston-Dillard Area Chamber of Commerce First Citizen of the year in 1995. Penny was friendly, outgoing and had many friends. She will be greatly missed by friends, neighbors, community members and family.
Survivors include husband, Harold L. Dsenis of Winston; daughters, Peggy Hill and her husband, Henry of Sonoma, California; Christine Whalen and friend, Bill Locker of Winston, Oregon; Dorcas Manley and her husband, Mark of Portland, Oregon; grandchildren, Logan Whalen, Danielle Dabbah, Nellie Hill and Anna Dsenis.
