Norman "DeVere" Martin, 73, Tucson, Arizona, died Saturday, November 28, 2009, at his home. His death was unexpected.
He was born July 31, 1936, in Chanute, Kansas, to Helen A. Burtch & Glenn Martin. He was raised from a toddler in Chanute by his mother and stepfather, Daniel E. Bower Jr.
He grew up in Chanute and attended Bunker Hill country school, Royster Jr. High, and graduated from Chanute High School in 1954. He earned degrees from varied colleges in Engineering, Business Administration, and Accounting. He also attended several flight schools. In the aviation field, DeVere held a commercial pilot license with single and multi-engine land, instrument, and rotorcraft (helicopter) ratings, and as a flight instructor. He was also type-rated in several turbo-prop and jet aircraft. He acquired many hours of national and international ‘Pilot-in-Command' time in 20 years of professional flying.
He was in the Army National Guard in 1953-1954. He joined the US Army in 1954, serving a 19 month tour in Korea, then in Quincy, MA, with the 514th Missile Battalion. He was honorably discharged in 1957.
On April 2, 1961, he married Lila Norreen Werner in Mayer, Minnesota. She survives.
He worked a variety of jobs, including being a pin-setter at the Chanute Bowling Alley; pumping gas; farm worker; fireman for Santa Fe Railroad; construction engineer; VP of air-craft maintenance for Kensair; VP of Military Aviation Contractors Inc.; Operations Manager and Director of Aviation Operation and Chief Pilot for Dawson Co. (Int'l construction & properties management). After retirement he purchased two service stations with auto repair shops; started up a new computer retail business (hardware and software); wrote and produced his own line of software programs for service stations and auto repair; entered into an accounting business with his sister, Janice; and entered into a ham radio retail business. He finally retired again in 1997.
Over the years he enjoyed golf, flying, and ham radios. His family, and especially his grandchildren were the loves of his life. He was schooling his grandson in ham radio operation, and ended up starting up a class and certifying several Tucson youngsters in amateur radios. He was past president of the AZ State Amateur Radio (Ham) Operators, along with having held several other positions with that association. He was a leading radio operator aiding in the escort of bicycle races across the desert; and he was a storm chaser.
Although he was raised in the Nazarene religion, he no longer belonged to an organized church. However, his belief and faith in God never wavered.
Other survivors include two daughters and a son-in-law, Jenise Deann Martin, Tucson, AZ, and Andrea Lynn and Steve Cooper, of Marana, AZ; two grandchildren, Nicholas Gregory "Nick" Cooper and Megan Leigh Cooper, both of Marana, AZ; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Jon David I and Diane Bower, of Pagosa Springs, CO, and James Stephen "Steve" and Donna Bower, of Loveland, CO; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Janice W. and Tom Henderson, of Parker, CO, and Laurel M. "Lolly" and Ron Stoops, of Chanute, KS; an aunt, Ellen E. (Bower) Knock, of Chanute, KS; an uncle, W. Fred Bower, of Chanute, KS; nieces, Laura Whittley and Tammy Thornton, Thayer, KS, and a nephew, Jon D. Bower II, of Chanute, KS; and scores of other nieces, nephews, cousins, and other extended family members who are spread throughout the U.S.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and by his youngest sister, Mary Helen Novak, in 2008.
Cremation has taken place. Funeral was Thursday, Dec. 4, 2009, at the Evergreen Mortuary in Tucson, AZ. Private family inurnment was Friday, Dec. 5, 2009, in Evergreen Cemetery, Tucson, Arizona, under the direction of Evergreen Mortuary, Tucson.
