Thelma Despain

Thelma Gwen Despain, 80, of Mediapolis, died at 350 a.m. Monday, Jan. 5, 1998, at Burlington Medical Center.

Born Dec. 30, 1917, at Mediapolis, she was the daughter of Charles and Laura Jones Hutchcroft. She married Willis Despain June 30, 1939, in Mediapolis.

She was a graduate of Mediapolis High School and Burlington Junior College. She was a homemaker and in her earlier years, taught country school and worked as a sales clerk.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Mediapolis, Mediapolis TTT, Mediapolis American Legion Auxiliary and was a board member of the Mediapolis Public Library.

Survivors include her husband; one son, Brian Despain of Mount Pleasant; one daughter, Gwen Scholer of Burlington; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two sisters, Jean Heines and Peggy Daedlow, both of Mediapolis; and one brother, Charles Hutchcroft of Mediapolis.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a daughter.

Visitation will be from noon to 7 p.m. today at Hagele and Honts Funeral Home in Mediapolis. There will be no family visitation.

The funeral for Mrs. Despain will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at First United Methodist Church in Mediapolis, with the Rev. Melvin Miller officiating. Burial will be in Kossuth Cemetery.

A memorial has been established for Mediapolis Public Library.
