Artist, illustrator and children's author. He studied at Framlingham College, Suffolk, where he initially trained as an architect. He won the Royal Institute of British Architects' Soane Medallion for design and also its Certificate of Honourable Mention, but chose instead to become an artist. He sold his first works through Liverpool's Walker Art Gallery when in his twenties and soon established himself as a successful watercolourist, engraver, lithographer and etcher, mostly concentrating on traditional landscape subjects. He was awarded a travelling scholarship by the Royal Institute of British Architects and spent several years travelling in Europe, publishing many of the resulting drawings in "The First Italian Portfolio" in 1913. He then became associated with the Senefelder Club; a group of distinguished artists devoted to lithography, and in 1914 produced a set of six lithographs entitled "First Belgian Portfolio", which he sold to raise funds for Belgian civilians made homeless during World War I. He exhibited many paintings at the Royal Academy during his life time and also designed posters for London Transport, Shell Oil, the Great Western Railway and the Empire Marketing Board. Examples of his work can be seen at the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Walker Art Gallery. He was also the author of two illustrated children's books, "Express", 1925 and "Hidden Gold", 1926.
