John Gwin Stevenson was the third of eleven known children of Robert Montgomery Young Stevenson (1816-1889) and Sarah Harper Guinn (1825-1901), who married 24 Nov 1843 at Union County, Arkansas.

John married Sarah Rebecca Langford (1852-1950) on 22 Sep 1870 at Summerfield, Claiborne Parish, Louisiana. John and Sarah were the parents of fifteen? (as given in 1900 census) children, of whom the names of thirteen are known, namely:

In 1880 John (a farmer), Sallie, Della, Mary and Angie, along with Sallie's single sister Ida Elizabeth "Lizzie Langford (age 35, born GA) and John's brother James E. Stevenson (age 28) were living at the 1st Ward, Claiborne Parish, Page 238C, Louisiana. All of the children were born in Claiborne Parish, Louisiana. In 1900 John (a merchant), Sallie (mother of 15, 9 living), Angie, Ola, Sellers, Ernest, Floyd, Frank and Mary were living at Junction City, Union County, Arkansas along with Sallie’s single sister, Lizzie. In 1910 John (a farmer), Sallie (mother of nine, all living, sic), Floyd, Frank, May and Sallie's single sister, Lizzie, were living at Val Verde County, Texas. In 1920 John, Sallie, Floyd, Frank, May, and Mollie (age 17, daughter-in-law; wife of Frank), and Sallie's single sister, Lizzie Langford (1845-1927) were living at Phoenix, Maricopa County, Texas.
