Born Cecelia Flaxman in Manhattan, she was brought to Tottenville as an infant and graduated from Tottenville High School. She moved to Dongan Hills upon her marriage and lived there until twenty-five years ago, when she relocated to Manalapan.
With her husband, Arthur, she had owned Handy Varieties on Richmond Road in Dongan Hills. She also worked as a bookkeeper for the former Uniforms by Ostwald in New Brighton. She retired in 1979.
Mrs. Cohen was an avid reader who enjoyed games and trivia challenges. She amazed her family with her ability to add a column of numbers in her head faster than someone could with a calculator.
A devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, she is most remembered for her commitment to her family.
Her husband, Arthur, died in 2004 after sixty-six years of marriage.
Surviving are her son, Dr. Burton Cohen; her daughter, Sharon Gruby; her sister, Shirley Horowitz; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
There was to be a graveside service held today at 1:00 p.m. in United Hebrew Cemetery, Richmond.
