He was born Nov. 28, 1911, at Sikeston. On June 9, 1973, he married Mrs. Grace Young of Benton. He had been employed by Himmelburger-Harrison Lumber Co. and Morehouse as a foreman until his retirement in 1974. He later served as police chief of Benton from 1976 to 1977. He was a member of Chaffee Elks Lodge 1810 and the Benton Chamber of Commerce.
Surviving is his wife; son, Joesph E. Thompson Jr; daughters, Mrs. Reba Kilhafner, Mrs. Ruth Downs and Mrs. Carolyn Barnett; stepsons, Leroy Hodgekiss, Charles Hodgekiss and Rick Towery; stepdaughters, Mrs. Patsy Diebold and Mrs. Vicky Starks; and 16 grandchildren.
Funeral service will be held Tuesday at Amick-Burnett Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Matthews Cemetery.
