BINGHAM - A 35-year-old copper miner was killed Tuesday about 5 a.m. when he fell under a train loaded with waste and was crushed to death.
The victim was Floyd L. DeMill, 2368 E. 7600 South Cottonwood Heights, father of four children.
Pusher Train
Kennecott Copper Corp. officials said the mishap occurred on "G" dump on the west side of Bingham Canyon. Mr. DeMill, a brakeman, was riding on the end car of a pusher waste train and was either knocked or fell onto the tracks.
The entire train passed over his body, spokesmen said.
Workmen, who first reached the scene said it appeared that one of the cars dumped to the inside, knocking Mr. DeMill onto the tracks.
He has been employed at the mine since 1950 where he started as a trackman and was promoted to brakeman in 1954.
Mr. DeMill served in the U.S. Marine Corps, during World War II and participated in four campaigns in the Pacific.
Born in Ephraim
He was born June 19, 1923, in Ephraim, a son of Floyd Monroe and Fern Bjerregaard DeMill, and married Norma Player June 22, 1956, in Elko, Nev.
Survivors include his widow, three daughters and a son, Peggy, Allene, Tina and Craig. Also surviving are his parents of Ephraim, two brothers, and three sisters, Perry D. DeMill, Mrs. Charles (Nadine) Thorpe, and Mrs. E. G. (Mary) Lowry, of Salt Lake City; Mark DeMill, Ephraim, and Mrs. Dan (LaZell) Williams of Malad, Idaho.
