He married 1) Elizabeth King Fales Freeman on Oct. 25, 1917 at St.John's Chapel in Jessfield, Shanghai, China. Together they became the parents of John Watson Little II and Elizabeth Freeman (Little) Shippee.

He married 2) Alice Joy McDonald Campbell on Feb. 3, 1940 at the Union Church in Victoria, Hong Kong. They were married a little over a year before she died in Canton.

He married 3) Mrs. Ruth Dickerman (Stoddard) Smith, whose first husband was Ambassador Horace Harrison Smith.
