All of this information was given to me by Bonnie Howell Dotson who was Hardin's Granddaughter, Bonnie's mother was Leni Leota Defreece Howell, a daughter to Hardin. Per Bonnie Hardin died when he was 86yrs old, and she says he was 16yrs older then Emma, but the research that I have done on the census records, and his birth record, reveals a birth date of Nov 1854, which means he was only abt 3yrs older than his wife Emma, and only 75yrs when he died. Hardin's age still remains a mystery, and as to why his children thought he was older then he really was is unknown. Hardin was Irish and French -Defreece originated in the Netherlands. Hardin would have nothing to do with horses or mules - he would only raise oxen. After his wife Emma died, his daughters Georgia and Ethel was still at home - Georgia got married and moved to Ohio, then Hardin and Ethel moved in with his other daughter Laura, as they did not want Ethel staying at home alone, because Hardin was gone a lot working in the fields. Hardin worked right up until about 2 wks before he got sick and died. Bonnie said that Hardin never did get over Ethel leaving and he worried about her a lot after she got married. He would often call his other daughters/granddaughters "Ethel" instead of their correct names. Hardin never drank Alcohol. Hardin never smoked cigarettes, or chewed tobacco, but he would go out to the back porch and smoked a pipe after each meal. Hardin was very firm on his children, but they respected their daddy very much. Hardin Died of Blights disease (Kidney problems).
