As the hands of the clock pointed to ten Monday night, the subject of this sketch took his departure after having journeyed the paths of earthly life for 72 years, 4 months, and 16 days.
His boyhood and young manhood were spent in Kentontown, Kentucky, where at the age of 19 he was united in marriage to Malinda Catherine Wood. Five years of married life were lived in that state during which time a son, John M., and a daughter, Laura T., were born.
Leaving Kentucky, Mr. and Mrs. Ashbrook in company with the "Uncle Mack" Wood family journeyed in covered wagons to Rice County, Kansas, where they resided two years. During their residence there came another daughter, Susie, came to gladden their hearts. Leaving Kansas, (again traveling in covered wagons) the party came to Nodaway County and Mr. and Mrs. Ashbrook took up their residence on the Captain Grigsby farm, four miles west of Skidmore, living there two years. They then came to Skidmore, which has been their home excepting two years, (1890-91) which were spent in Parnell. After coming to Skidmore, two more daughters, Mary Madge and Abi A., were born.
For more than forty years Mr. Ashbrook has been identified with the business interests of Skidmore, having conducted a photograph studio during the greater part of that time. There are only very few homes in many miles of Skidmore where photographs, the fruits of his efforts, cannot be found.
Only a few years ago Mr. Ashbrook was winner of a first prize of $500 in a photographic contest of world-wide magnitude.
Although of an unassuming and retiring nature, he has lived so honorably and uprightly that his friends are numbered by those who knew him.
Twelve years ago, together with Mrs. Ashbrook, he became a member of the Christian church.
Together with Mrs. Ashbrook, the following children survive: John M. Ashbrook, Mrs. Laura Strickler, Miss Susie Ashbrook, and Mrs. Abi Gray. Miss Mary Ashbrook passed on five years ago. He also leaves two sisters, Mrs. Tom Snedeger of Little River, Kansas, and Mrs. Lucy Beverlin of Wray, Colorado. Also five grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at the home Wednesday afternoon at 2:30, with Rev. E. F. Hagee, a former pastor, in charge, Rev. John V. Hawk assisting.
