He graduated from Whitesburg High School, in Whitesburg, Letcher County, Kentucky, in 1941.

He served in the Army in World War II.

He married Anne Robertson Frye on 12/15/1946 in Cynthiana, Harrison County, Kentucky.

He graduated from the University of Kentucky Law School in 1948.

In 1954, 1956, and 1960, he was elected to the Kentucky state House of Representatives.

In 1963, he published his first book, "Night Comes To The Cumberlands". In total, Caudill published nine books, fifty magazine articles, and eighty newspaper articles.

After being a lawyer for twenty-eight years, Caudill retired and became a professor of history at the University of Kentucky from 1977 until 1985.

A chapter in David McCullough's book, "Brave Companions" refers to Harry Caudill as "a kind of crusader" for his environmental fight against the coal company's strip mining the mountains of Kentucky.
