"FOURTEEN MONTHS OLD DAUGHTER OF MR. AND MRS. AUGUST ALVES DROWNS IN TUB OF WATER"
"Biloxi was visited by an extremely sad accident this morning when little Claire Lola, the fourteen months old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. August Alves, was found dead in a tub of water in the kitchen of their home on Lameuse street shortly after 7:30 o'clock. The parents are grief stricken and although everything was done to save the life of the little one, it failed. Mrs. Alves had two children, a son and a little daughter, was working in the kitchen with her during the early morning and in the same room was a tub of water. Little Claire Lola was playing about the floor with her nipple in her mouth. Her mother went into the yard to do a little sweeping and left the child playing near the door where she could watch her. While engaged in her work it is thought that the little child got out of her sight and went to the tub of water where she climbed up with her nipple in her mouth. The nipple evidently fell into the water and the little one tried to reach it. In doing so it is thought she lost her balance and fell into the tub. The most pathetic part of the accident was when Mrs. Alves returned to the kitchen and in making a search for her little daughter of which she was so proud she found her lifeless body in the tub which had been placed in the kitchen only a short while previous. To say that she was frantic would be placing it light. She lifted the little one out of the tub and ran screaming through the house for help which responded to her frantic calls in the shape of a number of kind neighbors who immediatley came to her assistance and worked with the little child very diligently. At the same time a call was sent for Dr. Carroll who came to the home and used every means for saving the child. The pulmotor was also secured but the doctor claimed that three minutes were sufficient to cause the death of the infant and saving its life was impossible. The husband, who is employed at the car barn of the Gulfport & Mississippi Coast Traction Company was summoned and he too worked in hope of saving his little daughter. The accident, the saddest to occur in the city for some time, cast a gloom over the neighborhood and caused profound sorrow in the Alves home which is located on Lameuse street just opposite the traction company's plant. Little Claire leaves behind her a little brother and her parents who have the sympathy of the entire community."
