Guardsman (Private)
1st Battalion
The Grenadier Guards
British Army

He was deployed with the UK contingent of NATO forces in Afghanistan.

Gdsm Major and four other British soldiers died of gunshot wounds sustained in an attack in Shin Kalay, in the Nad e-Ali district, Helmand province. They had been working as mentors and living in a compound at an Afghan National Police (ANP) checkpoint for two weeks. Six British servicemen and two ANP officers were also injured. Initial reports indicate one Afghan policeman opened fire on the soldiers as they were sitting down to tea or resting after a patrol. The incident is under investigation.

Aged 18, he was from Cleethorpes, Lincolnshire. He completed training in November 2008 and his first posting was to Nijmegen Company, Grenadier Guards, where he conducted numerous State Ceremonial and Public Duty engagements. He was posted to the 1st battalion in April 2009 and deployed in October as a top cover gunner within the Commanding Officer's Tactical Group.

Gdsm Major is survived by parents Adrian and Kim, brothers Lewis and Daniel, sister Paige, grandparents June and Fred Major and Harry and Pat Gilliatt, along with other family and friends. His family said, "Jimmy was a tremendous son. He was proud to be a soldier and died doing a job he loved. We are devastated by the loss of Jimmy. He was a loving son, brother and grandson and a dear friend to everyone. We are proud of the fact that Jimmy was prepared to do his duty, helping the people of Afghanistan".

Funeral with full military honours was held on November 25, 2009 at St Peter's Church, Grimsby.
