Sarah Thomas Belz, 85, civic and philanthropic leader and wife of businessman Philip Belz, died Saturday at Baptist Memorial Hospital after a long illness. Along with her husband, Mrs. Belz was known for her generosity and active involvement in many communal, national and international religious, charitable and educational organizations. The family's real estate investment business is one of the largest in the South. She and her husband were known as the first couple of The Peabody, which the family bought in 1975, renovated and reopened in 1981, a key event in the revitalization of downtown. They were honored at a gala celebration at the hotel on their 65th anniversary last November. The couple was honored by Baron Hirsch Congregation, B'nai B'rith, Junior Achievement, National Conference of Christians and Jews, State of Israel Bonds, Jewish National Fund, Hebrew University of Jerusalem and other organizations. The Belz School of Cantorial Music at Yeshiva University in New York is dedicated to them. She also leaves a son, Jack A. Belz, two sisters, Dora Goldstein and Berta Loskove, a brother, Larry Thomas, 10 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. She was the mother of the late Paul and Leslie Belz. Services will be at 3 p.m. today at the Sam Abraham Chapel of Baron Hirsch Cemetery. Canale Funeral Directors has charge. The family asks that memorials be sent to the charity of the donor's choice.
