Salem, NY-Carlene Julia Jones "Charlie" Banks, 72, Salem, NY, passed away peacefully at home, on Wednesday, July 8, 2009, following a long illness. She was born in Gardiner, ME, July 24, 1936, to Margaret West and James Neill Jones.
Carlene was educated in Standish and Portland schools.
Carlene married Oscar W. "Bill" Schoen, Jr., in 1954, with whom she had one child, William N. Schoen. They divorced in 1961.
In 1987, Carlene married George Henry Banks, of Salem, NY. Charlie enjoyed the role of stepmother to George's four children, Todd, Alison, Kenneth and George.
Carlene worked as a teller for numerous banks, a receptionist for an insurance company, a trainer and head waitress for the Red Lobster Restaurants and a CNA Home Health Care Aid.
Carlene enjoyed reading, crafts, flower gardening, her computer, her grandchildren and genealogy research. She volunteered at the Bancroft Public Library in Salem where she transcribed all of the cemetery records.
Her husband, George, both parents and her brother, Richard N. Jones, predeceased her.
She is survived by her son, William "Bill" N. Schoen, of Portland, ME, stepchildren: Todd Banks and wife Kathleen of Salem, NY, Alison Radliff and husband Robert of Stillwater, NY, Kenneth Banks and wife Lauren of Unionville, CT and George C. Banks of Salem NY, sister, Deborah A. Lewis, of Dover Foxcroft, ME, and brother, Edward E. Jones and wife, Lorraine, of Gray, ME. Grandchildren: Chelsea and William Schoen, of Hollis, ME. Step-grandchildren: Alyssa and Alexandra Banks of Schuylerville, NY, Abigail and Schuyler Radliff of Stillwater NY, Jalen and Donovan Banks of Unionville CT. She is also survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Relatives and friends are invited to call Saturday, July 11, 2009 from 4-6 PM at the McClellan Funeral Home, 19 East Broadway, Salem. A funeral service will follow at 6:00 pm at the funeral home with Rev. Debbie Earthrowl officiating.
Interment will take place on Saturday, July 18, 2009 at 1:00 pm at the Kezar Falls Burial Ground in Kezar Falls, ME where Charlie will be interred at the same time as her brother, Richard N. Jones who passed away June 22, 2009.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in memory of Charlie may be made to the American Cancer Society, 260 Osborne Road, Loudonville, NY 12211.
The family would like to thank all those who helped care for Carlene over the past year, especially Peg Culver, Mary Saunders and Barb Jarvis. Her wish to remain at home would not have been possible without these wonderful people.
