Rita E. Charland, 89, of Mount Pleasant Home, formerly of 708 Hennepin St., died at 6:40 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 29, 2009, at her son's home, of natural causes.
Services will be at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 3, at Sacred Heart Church. Entombment will be in Resurrection Garden Mausoleum at Mount Calvary Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 2, at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main St., where there will be a parish wake service at 4 p.m.
She was born on Nov. 17, 1919, in Harpers Ferry, Iowa, daughter of Edward and Aline (Hogan) Valley. She married Joseph A. Charland on Feb. 21, 1944, in Harpers Ferry; he preceded her in death on Sept. 19, 1990.
She was a member of Sacred Heart Church and Rosary Society. She was formerly a volunteer at the Food Pantry and visited residents at area nursing homes.
In her spare time, Rita enjoyed playing bingo and cards.
Surviving are three children, Denny (Toni) Charland, of Kansas City, Mo., Peggy (Dave) Kammerude, of Galena, Ill., and Joe (Pam) Charland Jr., of Dubuque; eight grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Paula Valley, of Waukon, Iowa; and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Eunice (Lawrence) Kennicker; and two brothers, Laverne (Margaret) Valley and Cletus Valley.
