Silas N. Howard, aged 66 years, died on the 5th ult. at his home in Nevada, Vernon Co., Mo. Mr. Howard moved to this county when it was yet a wilderness, and settled near the place now called Hessville. He cleared up a heavily timbered farm, and aided in the construction of the National road from Fremont to Perrysburgh. He remained in this county long enough to see the population rapidly increasing, and the establishment of schools and churches, in which he took a lively interest. His health failing, he removed to Minnesota, where he remained until he regained his health, when he moved to Missouri where he died. His death breaks another link which binds the present with the past.

Another Pioneer Gone
Died on the 5th instant, at his home in Nevada, Vernon County MO.,
Silas N. Howard, Esq., aged 66 years.
Mr. Howard, many years ago, settled at a place now called Hessville, a few miles west of Fremont, but at that time a wilderness. Here he cleared up a heavily-timbered farm and aided in the construction and completion of the National Road from Fremont to Perrysburgh. He remained at that place long enough to see population thicken around him, and schools and churches thoroughly established, in all of which he took a lively interest. His health failing, he sold out and removed to Minnesota, where he regained that great blessing; but, becoming weary of the long and tedious winters of that region, he again removed and located in Southwestern Missouri, where he died.
Mr. Howard was an honest, honorable man, an attached and sincere friend, and wherever best known, most loved. His death breaks another of the links in the chain that binds those who loved him to earth, and they hope ere long to meet him in a brighter, happier world.

HOWARD -- Recently, at his residence in Nevada, Vernon county, Missouri, Silas N. Howard, Esq., formerly of this place, aged 66 years.
Mr. Howard was well known to most of the old residents of this county, and his death will be received with more than usual sadness.
He came to Rochester from Ohio as early as 1855 or 1856, so much reduced by disease of the lungs as to be unable to walk. He found the recuperative virtues of the Minnesota climate so beneficial to his health, that he pre-empted a quarter section of land in the town of Marion, and made his home there, where he was entirely restored to health, and remained until the spring of 1868, when he sold his homestead to the county for a "Poor Farm" and removed to Nevada, Mo.
A few weeks after establishing his new home in Missouri, Mrs. Howard, his wife, died, notwithstanding she was vigorous and strong when they left Minnesota.
Mr. Howard was a quiet, unassuming, honest man. He was most respected where he was best known. He was warmly attached to his friends, and loved by them in return. His moral character was above reproach, and "his word was as good as his bond." In his death Olmsted county loses one of its oldest settlers; and many of its inhabitants one of their best friends.
His children in Missouri and his aged friends in Sandusky have the sincere sympathy of the writer of this obituary tribute to his memory.
