Talmadge was born to Thomas and Alice Gunnels, February 10th 1923 at home in Hanover, Texas. He was named after actress Norma Talmadge and his fathers middle name (Pitts).

Served in WW2 and joined Army Air Corps, and ended up in USAF, terminal rank Lieutenant Colonel.

He was a bomber pilot and a fighter pilot during World War II in the Army Air Corps, and he also served in the Pacific Theatre (Korea). During his 14 years of military service, he received the Korean Service Medal, Asiatic Pacific Service Victory Medal WWII, Presidential Citation U.S.A. Presidential Citation Philippines, and the Bronze Star.

On March 23, 1945 married Margia Elizabeth Croft from Thomasville Georgia.
