She was born July 24, 1909, in Buffalo, N.Y., to Daniel P. and Emma C. (Funk) Courtney.
On Sept. 2, 1935, she married Walter R. Bernard and he died Oct. 23, 1996.
Surviving are a son and his wife, Terry and Sue of Cincinnati; a daughter and her husband, Nancy and J. Stan Hebner, Richmond, Va., and a daughter, Sister Patrick Marie (Susan), Santa Fe, N.M.; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Deceased are four sisters.
She was a graduate of Deaconess Hospital School of Nursing in Buffalo. She did volunteer work for the American Red Cross, teaching home first aid classes during World War II and assisting at the Blood Bank from its inception until the 1980s. She taught first aid to local Girl Scouts and served as a nurse at their day camps and the Mercer County Fair.
She was a member of the Dwyer-Mercer County Library Board of Trustees for 40 years, serving as president for eight years and being involved in the expansion of the county library system. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and the Altar-Rosary Society, a charter member and former president of the Celina Business & Professional Women's Club and a member of the New York and Ohio State Nurses Association. She was also president of the St. Marys Deanery Council of Catholic Women and a board of directors of the Cincinnati Archdiocesan Council.
Funeral Mass is 10:30 a.m. Friday at the church.
Burial will be at St. Marys Catholic Cemetery, Celina. (Obituary contributed by Ron Alig)
