Josephine was the daughter of Joseph Wainright (1798-? before 1870) and Louisa Myrick (1822-? after 1900). She was married briefly to Joseph Clinton (marriage record at Mobile County courthouse) in 1866. She had a son named Joseph in 1867... then she married in 1868 to George Emerson (1842-1930).

She was the middle child of 6 siblings. They were Martin Van Buren Wainright (1841-1915), Mary J. Wainright Lee (1846-?), George W. Wainright (1855-1943), Louisa Virginia Wainright (1856-1945) and Octavia Rubens Wainright Rencher (1860-1950).

She and her husband George Emerson were the parents of eight children.
