Private memorial services for a member of a pioneer Rockdale family, Mary Elizabeth "Betty" Harris, 74, were held at IOOF Cemetery on Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2002, with Dr. Joe Weldon Bailey of Milano officiating. Mrs. Harris died Sunday, Jan. 12, in a Rockdale nursing facility.

She was born in Fort Worth to Hugh and Lucile Poole Estell. She moved to Rockdale at an early age and was reared and educated here and in Rodessa, LA. Mrs. Harris operated a private bookkeeping business after returning to Rockdale from Houston in 1976. She also operated a book store and was active in the crafts business. This latter activity made her known by many as "The Frog Lady." Those who knew her well knew her as a magical story teller. Mrs. Harris was a teacher at the MARC Center for several years before illness forced her retirement.

She was preceded in death by a son, Timothy Hugh Harris; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Estell of Rockdale; paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Rhodes Estell of Rockdale; and maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Poole of Rockdale.

Survivors are two sons and their spouses, Ken and Betty Harris of Dallas and Mike and Lorrie Harris of Cameron; two daughters and spouses, Dario and Judi Juarez of Fort Worth and Ray and Janette Cross of Broken Arrow, OK; a sister, Dr. Lucile Estell of Rockdale; and a daughter-in-law, Judith Harris of Houston.
