James Halleck was a farmer and nurseryman by occupation, the maiden name of his wife being Mary Gleason. About 1865 the family moved to Newton County, Indiana, James Halleck erecting a saw-mill on the Beaver Lake Ditch, which he operated a number of years. He later moved to the vicinity of Fair Oaks and proved himself an active and enterprising citizen, being instrumental in having the so-called "milk train" on the Monon Railway established. His political principles allied him with the republican party, and while living in Newton County he was elected and served as one of the county commissioners.
