William Acy. Sr. was born in West Ella, a small village west of Hull, England. His parents were Joseph and Lucy Acy (maiden name Martindale). Joseph Acy worked as a gardener for the wealthy Sykes family in West Ella. William Acy, Sr. emigrated to Baltimore around 1819 and became employed by General Wade Hampton of Columbia, South Carolina. William's younger brother, Daniel seems to have accompanied him because there is a record of the death of Daniel Acy near Columbia, SC in 1826. William Acy, Sr. married Mary Ann Gardiner of Baltimore on July 5, 1821. Mary Ann Gardiner's parents were Ann Burgine (found in Greenmount Cemetery, Baltimore) and William Gardiner. William Acy,Sr. and Mary Ann Gardiner's first child, William Acy, Jr. was born on Wade Hampton's Millwood plantation in South Carolina on Sept. 7, 1822. In 1828, William Acy, Sr. moved to Wade Hampton's Houmas Plantation near Donaldsonville, Louisiana. William Acy, Sr.'s wife died there at the time of the birth of their daughter, Lucy Ann Acy in 1832. William Acy, Sr. never remarried. William made a trip back to England to visit his ailing father in 1851. At that time he also visited the Great Exhibition in London. In later years he seems to have divided his time between South Carolina, visiting with his grandson William Bruce Lynam (memorial # 30851202 -son of Lucy Ann Acy & Mark Lynam) and Louisiana, staying with William Acy, Jr.
