William James Altman, 63, retired dry cleaner of Andrews, died at 6:45 p.m. Thursday at the Veterans Hospital in Columbia where he had been a patient since Dec. 29. He had been in declining health for several years.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at his residence. Officiating will be the Rev. W. C. Stackhouse, pastor of the Trinity Methodist Church. Burial will be in Andrews Memorial Cemetery, directed by Mayer Funeral Home.
The honorary escort will be composed of members of the American Legion Post 69 of Andrews and the active pallbearers will be six members of the local 40 & 8.
Mr. Altman was born Feb. 21, 1891, in the Sutton's section of Williamsburg County and was a son of the late S. P. B. Altman and the late Mrs. Mary Dennis Altman. He was educated at the old Suttons School and served in the Army during World War I. He came to Andrews in 1921, and operated a dry cleaning establishment here until he retired a few years ago, due to ill health.
He was a member of Trinity Methodist Church. He was also a member of the Andrews American Legion Post 69 and of the 40 & 8.
He is survived by his widow, the former Miss Virginia Winston; his stepmother, Mrs. Margaret Durant Altman of Andrews; a son, Presley L. Altman of Andrews; a sister, Mrs. Carrie Altman Griffin of Sumter; and two half-sisters, Miss Alice Altman of Andrews and Mrs. H. W. Koonce of Florence.
