From Breidafjord, Iceland, Bjarni and his partner Thorhall Gamalason voyaged to Greenland, wintering with Eric the Red. He joined Thorfinnr Karlsefni's expedition to Vinland, but apparently did not attend Karlsefni's exploration southward from Straumfjord. Rather he and a boatload of Icelanders left the Straumfjord base for Iceland but were blown off-course into "waters infested with maggots, and before they knew it the ship was riddled under them and begun to sink." They drew lots to see who would find safety in the ship'S smaller boat. Bjarni gave up his place in favor of a young man who seemed afraid to die, and perished with his ship and others who had failed in the draw around the year 1006.
