At the age of five a band of Indians massacred his father and three others while capturing Daniel, his mother, and six brothers and sisters. After eight years in captivity all were freed. He moved to Ohio around 1790 and served two terms in the Ohio Militia during the war of 1812. He then settled in Indiana and moved to Illinois in 1834 where he was the first settler of Wayne Township in DuPage County.
