Foster Brown was the son of Elisha Brown and Rebekah Hastings of Warwick, Massachusetts. His first marriage to Seraphina C. Wheeler of Greenwich, Hampshire, Massachusetts, produced a daughter and a son. When his first wife died in 1852, his children were young enough to need a stepmother, so in 1853, he married Roxanna Stone who helped him raise his two children, and his granddaughter Aurianna Louis Brown as well.
