Dorothy Mae (Post) Strobl passed away peacefully on Friday, March 3, 2006 at the age of 89 years.
She was born 10 miles northwest of Red Cloud on May 25, 1916, the first of eight children born to Glenn W. and Hazel Edna (Fleming) Post. Before she was a year old, the family moved to what became known as the Post family farm, six miles north and two miles west of Cowles.
While growing up, Dorothy worked daily for her father around the farm and assisted with the livestock. She graduated from Cowles High School with the class of 1934 and then attended Kearney State Teachers College (now the University of Nebraska at Kearney) for one year.
On August 17, 1936, Dorothy was united in marriage with Vencil J. Strobl. Together, they owned and operated two filling stations and a tank wagon service, delivering gas to farmers under the name of Strobl Oil Co., for 38 years in the Red Cloud area.
In August of 1986, Vencil and Dorothy celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with all their children and grandchildren present, along with many friends and relatives. Vencil preceded Dorothy in death in 1991.
Survivors include Dorothy's four children: James Strobl and wife, Diane, of Lawrence, Kan., Richard Strobl and wife, Susan, of Hagerstown, Md., Dannie Strobl and wife, Shari, of Danville, Ky., and Barbara Hubl and Mark Schmittou of Yuma, Ariz.; 10 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. Also left to treasure her memory are her sisters: Margaret Biddlecomb of California and Allison Wilson of Kansas; one brother, Jim Post of Arkansas; other relatives and a host of friends.
After Vencil's death, Dorothy moved to Yuma, Ariz., to live near her daughter and resided in an assisted living home. She was an excellent cook and an avid bridge player. She loved sewing and quilting. Dorothy was also famous to many children in Red Cloud for her homemade root beer. She very seldom missed listening to the Nebraska Cornhusker football games. She was a member of the Congregational Church and Order of Eastern Star when she lived in Red Cloud.
Funeral services were held for Dorothy on Saturday, March 11, 2006 at 10:30 a.m. at the Williams Funeral Home Chapel in Red Cloud with the Rev. Jon Hansen officiating. Marcia Thompson sang "Amazing Grace" and "His Eye is on the Sparrow" with Jeanne Talkington, organist.
Casketbearers were Audrey Soergel, Scott Strobl, Michelle Walker, Amy Easum, Bryan Strobl, Michael Strobl, Jeri Jo Badilla, Jeremy Strobl, Benjamin Strobl and Brandon Strobl.
Interment was in the Red Cloud Cemetery with Williams Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Congregational Christian Church, Order of Eastern Star or the Webster County Community Hospital.
