Mary Gene Fagan, 74, longtime resident of Oak Harbor, died Nov. 19, 2002 at Whidbey General Hospital.
Mrs. Fagan was born Sept. 28, 1928, in Trempeleau, Wis., to Gene Curtis Atwood and Lucy Mae (Church) Atwood. She moved with her family to Grand Ridge, Ill., before moving to Washington State, where they lived briefly in Maple Valley before moving to Maxwelton Beach and then Oak Harbor. Mary graduated from Oak Harbor High School.
On June 25, 1948, she married Charles L. "Chuck" Fagan at the old family farmhouse on Hillcrest.
Mary led a very active life. She made over 140 dolls; was a baby sitter for teachers' children; wrote many letters; was a foster mother; chauffeured children; worked for a time in the cafeteria at Oak Harbor High School; sold real estate; judged gardens and flowers.
She also enjoyed hiking, loved Whidbey Island and taking people on tours of its many sights, and loved babies.
She was musical and enjoyed singing and playing the piano and cello. She was a Campfire Girls counselor. Mary attended Oak Harbor First United Methodist Church, was a member of the Christian Women's Club and the Oak Harbor Garden Club.
Mary is survived by her husband Chuck, at home; one daughter, Cheri Marie (Fagan) Mills of Chicago, and two sons, Randal Lee Fagan and wife Kathy of Okinawa and Kevin Dee Fagan of Seattle; five grandchildren, Sean Fagan and wife Nancy of Colorado Springs, Colo., Skeeter Fagan of Oak Harbor, Kenyon (Fagan) Blaine and husband Jack of Pensacola, Fla., Cory and Kelly Mills, both of Chicago; one great-granddaughter, Joanna Rae Blaine; one brother, Lynn Curtis Atwood and wife Muriel of Kirkland; one sister, Shirley Anderson of Mount Vernon; one sister-in-law, Gerri Atwood of Oak Harbor; also, numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a sister Eileen File, a brother Austin Atwood and a nephews Warren Atwood.
