ELIZABETH, Ill. -- Bonnie Jean Selig, 65, of Galena, formerly of Elizabeth, and the Chicago suburbs, died peacefully at home Thursday, Oct. 8, 2009, surrounded by her family following a courageous battle with uterine cancer.

Cremation rites will be accorded and a memorial visitation will be held from 4 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 14, at Law-Jones Funeral Home, Elizabeth. Burial will be held at a later date in the Elizabeth Cemetery with a private family memorial service.

She was born on April 16, 1944, in Chicago, daughter of Stanley V. and Marjorie (Blackburn) Johnson. She was educated in Park Ridge Schools. She married Henry J. Selig on Nov. 23, 1991, in Downers Grove.

Bonnie and Hank moved to the Elizabeth area in 1996, when her parents moved to Elizabeth. She devoted much of her time to their care until their passing in 1999 and 2002. Bonnie was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother, and loved spending time with family and planning pool parties, holidays and family gatherings.

Bonnie was interested in genealogy and spent countless hours working on her family tree. That interest led her to thousands of volunteer hours answering inquiries through the internet on the Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness Web site. Hundreds of families throughout the world located ancestors through her efforts. Following on the work of previous Jo Daviess County researchers, she photographed countless cemeteries and graves in the county. Her research will be donated to the Elizabeth Historical Society.

Surviving are her husband, Hank Selig; her children, Kere (Dan) Knautz, Gregory (Katie) Von Rox, Stephanie (Chuck) Radeke and Robbyn (special friend, Chad Schemehorn) Sasek; grandchildren, Alexandria and Dakota Graf, Colton Knautz, Zoe and Zane Von Rox, Ethan and Lane Sasek and Chloe and Spencer Radeke; her sister, Barbara Hill; stepchildren, Debra Selig, Karen (Robert) Madura, Linda (Michael) Briscoe and David (Tammy) Selig; stepgrandchildren, Sam, Wil and Elizabeth Madura, Shane, Luke, Clay and Max Briscoe, Jenna Maloney, Jorie, Jacob and Jacie Selig and Tavian Schuster; and two almost grandchildren, Dylan and Nathan Schemehorn.
