Indian Campaign Medal of Honor Recipient. During the Civil War he served as a Private in Company A, 6th Pennsylvania Volunteer Cavalry. After the war he re-entered the United States Army at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and served as a Private in Company A, 1st US Cavalry. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for action in the Apache campaigns in the winter of 1872-1873. His citation reads "Gallant conduct during campaigns and engagements with the Apaches."
