He is preceded in death by his parents James A. "Tobe" Nickelson and Eural Nickelson, his wife of 64 years, Pearl Taylor Nickelson and son J.L. Nickelson, Jr., brothers Herbert Nickelson, Louis Nickelson, Carroll Nickelson, sisters Maureen Gray and Wilma Cornelius.
Nick was a Pacific World War II Army Veteran from 1944 to 1946. He was a recipient of a Purple Heart and the Bronze Star.
He worked for Texaco Refinery in Port Arthur and retired after 38 years. His dearest attribute of life was his family. His gentle spirit, calm and sweet nature made him very special to his family, friends and all who knew him.
He is survived by his son, Larry G. Nickelson of Port Arthur, and three grand children, Nicky Stone of Beaumont, Texas, Jason Nickelson of Death Valley, California, Clint Nickelson of Portland, Oregon and their mother Charlotte Ransonette of Port Arthur, Texas. One step-granddaughter, Christie Bertrand of Tyler, Texas, one sister Dorothy Nickelson Hopkins of Lumberton, Texas, several nieces and nephews and several great nieces and nephews, and long-time friend and companion, Judy Whaley of Port Arthur.
The Celebration of Life service will be held on Thursday, October 8, 2009 at 11:00 A.M. in the Thompson Memorial Chapel at Clayton Thompson Funeral Home in Groves, Texas. Interment will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park, Groves, Texas. A gather of friends and family will be on Wednesday, October 7, 2009 from 6 P.M. to 8 P.M. at Clayton Thompson Funeral Home.
