Dorris Searl was the daughter of Ira and Lydia Searl according to a Certificate of Marriage obtained at the City of Westfield in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts in 1976 as certified by Genevieve I. Rider, Asst City Clerk. Dorris was aged 20 when she was married to 35 year old Van Ransaler Chapman at Westfield, January 13, 1864, by Mr. L. Robinson, Justice of the Peace. City of Westfield, Massachusetts, birth records indicated the birth of two unnamed sons in 1865 and 1866. The 1870 United States census enumerated at Southampton, Massachusetts, listed Van R. Chapman age 41 with Dorris age 26 and three children, Homer age 5, Frank H. age 3, and Augusta age 2. Ruth Bernier, Assistant Clerk, Town of Southampton, wrote in 2009 that vital records had been destroyed between 1800 and 184? so there were no birth records available for those years. Dorris (Searle) Chapman, age 34, died in Huntington, Mass. and her death was recorded in Southampton where she had been born. However Ruth Bernier wrote that cemetery books for both West Part Cemetery and Center Cemetery in Southampton, Massachusetts, showed no record of her burial there, only that her parents were buried in Center Cemetery where her mother's marker was found and photographed half buried.
