Marion E. Adamson, 87, of Wenatchee and a former longtime resident of Cashmere, died Sunday, October 4, 2009, at Colonial Vista Care Center.
She was born January 22, 1922, in Grand Forks, ND, to Percy and Margaret (Hollevoet) Brown. Marion was raised and attended school in Fargo, ND, and graduated from Fargo High School in 1940. She attended Minot (N.D.) State University and graduated from Trinity Hospital School of Nursing in Minot.
In June 1945, she entered the U.S. Army at Fort Snelling in Minnesota and served as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Nursing Corps. She was based at Fort Leonard Wood, Camp Crowder and O'Reilly General, all in Missouri, and at Colorado Springs, CO and Fort Sheridan, IL.
After her honorable discharge in September 1946, Marion returned to her profession as a Registered Nurse at Trinity Hospital. She moved to Washington State in 1947, and settled in Seattle, where she worked at Virginia Mason Hospital.
On June 26, 1948, she married Allen T. "Al" Adamson in Seattle and they made their home in Cashmere, where he had been employed as an educator. They lovingly raised two children, Glenn born in 1952, and Linda born in 1954.
She continued her career at Deaconess Hospital in Wenatchee and was also a private duty nurse. In 1953, she began working at the Cashmere Nursing Home (later the Cashmere Convalescent Center) and was medication nurse there at the time she retired in 1984.
Marion always valued education and her desire for learning continued after retirement, as she and Al attended many elderhostel programs and classes throughout Washington State and the Midwest. Marion and Al continued living in Cashmere until May 2006, when they moved to Columbia Heights Assisted Living Community in Wenatchee. She moved to Colonial Vista Care Center in October 2008.
Marion was a member of the Monitor Methodist Church and a former member of the Cashmere Methodist Church, a member of the Cashmere Senior Center, where she was a past board member, and was also a member of the Cashmere American Legion, Post. No. 64.
She had been a member of the Long-Term Nursing Association, the Cashmere Vale Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star, the Cashmere Chapter, Order of Amaranth, and the DeMolay Mothers' Club.
Marion was involved in other public service work throughout her life with R.S.V.P. (Retired Senior Volunteer Program), March of Dimes, American Cancer Society, Tuberculosis Association and Lung Association fundraising drives, Red Cross nursing and volunteer work, and was an election board official.
Her other interests included embroidery needlework (dish towels) that she so lovingly and beautifully created for her family and for Cashmere Senior Center craft sales, working puzzles, playing computer solitaire, taking walks with Al and spending time with her family and friends. She was also an avid fan of the Washington State University Cougars and the Seattle Mariners.
Marion is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Linda and John Barta of Wenatchee; and her son, Glenn Adamson of Burlingame, KS. She was preceded in death by her husband, Al, in October 2008; her mother in 1946; her father in 1985; her brother, Robert, in 1993; and her brother, Jerome, in 2001.
Marion will always be remembered as a loving and devoted wife and mother... we love you forever.
At her request, there will be no services. Private family inurnment will be held at the Cashmere City Cemetery. Memorials, in lieu of flowers, may be made to the Cashmere Senior Center. Arrangements are by Heritage Memorial Chapel, East Wenatchee.
