Civil War Union Army Soldier. He first served as a Private in Company A, 7th Pennsylvania (1862) Militia from September 12 to September 26, 1862.

He then served as a Private in Company A, 32nd Pennsylvania Emergency Troops, being mustered in on June 26, 1863 and being mustered out on August 1, 1863.

He died of disease he contracted during his field service.

Son of Joseph Ashmead Clay and Cornelia Fletcher Clay.
