His father was Stephen Ambrose, a native Dunganville, Ardagh, Co Limerick and his mother was Mary Kennedy, from Adare, also in Limerick.He was MP for South Louth from 1892 until his death. He was a first cousin of Dr Robert Ambrose, who also practised in London, and represented West Mayo in Parliament from 1893-1910. He came of a family who were replete with members of the medicasl profession."
