filibustering expedition in Central America. From there he went to Chile where he bore arms during a revolution. He returned to the United States in 1858, going to California and then to Lewiston, Idaho where he learned a bit of the Nez Perce language and joined them as an interpreter. During the Idaho legislature session of 1863-1864 he became a sergeant at arms. He moved to Virginia City in the fall of 1864 when it was first becoming a gold boom town and the territorial capital. The new governing body wished to use Idaho, which they had just been a part of, as their model. Chamberli offered to ride, by horseback, the 1400 miles to Lewiston and return with a copy of the Idaho statues within 40 days. He completed the trip successfully. On his 27th birthday he was shot by a fellow named John Thornburn and he died the following day, "a thorough Union man," according to his obituary.
