Ben W. Burns, 96, of Farmington, MO, died Sept. 9, 2009.
He was born Nov. 22, 1912 in Steele to the late Ernest Burns and Edna Dowdy Burns.
In 1935, he was united in marriage to Evelyn Biggart, who preceded him in death in 1968. In 1971, he was united in marriage to Jean Miller.
He graduated as Valedictorian of his High School in Steele in 1931. Ben worked as Manager of the Division of Employment Security Office in Caruthersville for 25 years and retired as Chief of Field Administration in 1975. He served in the United States Navy during World War II and was a member of the Caruthersville American Legion Post for 63 years. He was a 51 year member of Caruthersville Masonic Lodge #461, where he served more than 10 years as Secretary. He was also a member of Kennett Chapter #211 Order of the Eastern Star. After retiring, he and Jean enjoyed traveling, woodworking and playing the organ.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest Burns and Edna Dowdy Burns; his wife, Evelyn Biggart Burns; and a grandson, Joseph E. Quelle Jr.
He leaves his wife, Jean Miller Burns; four daughters, Kay Rockwood and her husband Craig of Centerville, MA, Rebecca Dali and her husband Michael of Prairie Village, KS, Bonnie Partridge and her husband John of Columbus, MS and Susan Illes and her husband J.P. of Aurora, Co: a brother, Ruble Burns of Colorado Springs, CO; nine grandchildren and eight great grandchildren; as well as numerous other relatives and friends.
Funeral Services were held Saturday, September 12, 2009 in the H.S. Smith Funeral Home Chapel in Caruthersville with Pastor Kenny Lee officiating.
