Clara Hinckley Ensign, age 97, passed away at the home of her daughter Carolyn and Ralph Killinger on October 4, 1999.
She was born September 24, 1902 in Provo, Utah, a daughter of Ira Noble Hinckley and Lillian King Hinckley, first cousin to Gordon B. Hinckley and niece of The Honorable William H. King, 24 year senator from Utah. She was the last surviving sibling, including her brothers Parnel and Lawrence plus five sisters: Josephine Bentley, Margaret Mauss, Hortense Duncan, Edith Parker and Gwen Knuckles.
Surviving are her three children: John Dale (Sophia) Ensign II of Perry, Utah; Roger Hinckley Ensign of St. George, Utah; and Carolyn (Ralph) Killinger of Jefferson, Oregon. Additionally surviving are nine grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.
Born in Provo, Utah, she grew up in Salt Lake City, was graduated from the University of Utah and began her teaching career at Granite High School. She was married to John Dale Ensign in 1927 and subsequently raised her family in Salt Lake City; Jackson, Wyoming; Portland, Oregon and Ogden, Utah. Her husband died in Ogden in 1953 at which time she moved to Los Angeles, California where she continued her teaching, retiring and then substitute teaching into her 86th year. Clara enjoyed good health until her nineties, finally moving to St. George with Roger and then the last nine years with Carolyn in Oregon.
She taught Sunday School and was always active in church and did much temple work in her later years. She always bore strong testimony regarding the joy and happiness she enjoyed via the LDS Church and her sure belief in the importance of its values and standards, both in people's lives and its value to society. Her life spanned horse and buggy days through the Model T Ford and finally today's jets and rockets; she lived on a farm and in L.A., one of the world's largest and most diverse cities. A full and happy life was hers!
Funeral Services will be held in Salt Lake City on Saturday morning, October 9, 1999 at 11:00 a.m. at Larkin Mortuary, 2nd East and South Temple Street, with a viewing at 10 a.m. preceding the services.
Interment will be in the Salt Lake City Cemetery.
