Second son of the poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Ernest Longfellow became an accomplished artist, particularly as a painter. He studied Art in Paris from 1865-1866 and under French artist Thomas Couture from 1876-1877. He specialized in landscapes and portraits. His wife was Harriet Spelman, whom he married on May 21, 1868. The couple moved into a home (still standing) across the street from his father in 1871. Eventually he sold the home and traveled between Boston and New York, living in hotels. At the end of his life, he published a book called Random Memories. Upon his death, he donated a sizeable Art collection to Boston's Museum of Fine Arts; his own paintings were sold in part to benefit the MFA School.
