Daughter of author/editor/professor/diplomat James Russell Lowell and abolitionist Maria White Lowell. She was the couple's only child to survive into adulthood. In 1855, her father traveled to Europe and she was left in the care of a governess. That governess, Frances Dunlap, became Mabel's stepmother when she married James Russell Lowell in 1857. Mabel is mentioned by name in her father's poem "The First Snowfall." She married Edward Burnett of Southboro, Massachusetts, on April 3, 1872. Their children were James Lowell Burnett (1873), Joseph Burnett (1874), Francis Lowell Burnett (1878), Esther Lowell Burnett (1879) and Lois Burnett (1881).
