Philip was born in Caernarvon Township, Lancaster County, PA, and was reared on Poole Forge Farm near Churchtown, Caernarvon Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. At aged 17 years, he carved his name and date, "P. DeHAVEN A.D. 1870", on a Burr truss inside the red-painted covered bridge, which was (and still is in 2017) over the Conestoga River. Philip married Mary Elizabeth Snader {original spelling: "Schneader"}, about 1898 and had four living children. He became a Tobacco Farmer, noted on the 10 Jun 1880 US Federal Census, Caernarvon District 103, Lancaster County, PA.
