Hilda May Withrow was the daughter of Isaac J. Withrow and Mary "May" Cripps. Her mother died just a month before her first birthday, a victim of the Flu Pandemic of 1918. Hilda was the youngest of 5 children who survived infancy. After her mother's death, she was sent to Nova Scotia to live with her aunt, Elizabeth Fenton.
In 1941 she gave birth to her first child, a daughter. On March 13, 1948, in Maynard, Mass, she married Arnold Roderick MacLean. Together they had two daughters and a son. They were later separated but never divorced. Hilda passed away at the age of 63 in Cambridge, Mass.
