Christopher Robinson Tompkins, 76, a retired senior auditor in the State Auditor of Public Accounts office and a national figure in senior citizens' track circles, died of a heart attack yesterday.
He lived at 22 Hampton Hills Lane.
A Richmond native, Mr. Tompkins attended John Marshall High School, then transferred to and graduated from McGuire's University School, a former college preparatory school in Richmond. He graduated from the University of Virginia in 1933. He was a guard for the U.Va. football team and made All- Southern Conference. He also was on the track team but did not run competitively again after graduation until he was 70.
Mr. Tompkins then began entering track events and winning medals in competitions that included the Golden Olympics and National Senior Olympics. He competed in the decathalon, javelin, high jump, long jump, discus and shot put.
He was an auditor in the State Auditor of Public Accounts office for Virginia for 35 years before he retired in 1974. He was a U.S. Navy lieutenant commander and served in the Pacific during World War II.
Mr. Tompkins was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, the Tobaccoland Chorus and the Richmond Track and Field Club. He was past president of the Richmond Amateur Radio Club and the Virginia Amateur Radio Club and was a former board member of the Philadelphia Quarry Club.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Mary Leavell Tompkins; a twin brother, William S. Tompkins of Mathews County; a son, Christopher R. Tompkins Jr., and a daughter, Mrs. Mary Tompkins Miller, both of Richmond, and one grandson.
