Third vice-president of the Atlantic Coast Line, Savannah and Florida Railroad, and superintendent of Charleston and Savannah railroad thirty-four years. He was born, August 15, 1834, in Summerville, Colleton County, South Carolina. Attended private schools taught by his father, Rev. Philip Gadsden. Graduate of South Carolina Military Academy,in 1852. Chairman of the board of visitors of South Carolina Military Academy. Alderman of the city of Charleston for eighteen years. Married Miss Florida I. Morrall, In May, 1861. Began life as a rodman in engineering corps of Northern Ohio and Great Northern Railway.
