Lemuel Leroy Stockton was a son of Daniel and Rebecca (nee Smith) Stockton, and a grandson of "Smith Creek" John Stockton. Lemuel's great-grandfather was Thomas Stockton, Sr., who was the first settler in what would later become Clinton County, Kentucky. Lemuel Leroy Stockton was born, raised and died in Stockton's Valley, named for Thomas Stockton, Sr.

Lemuel Leroy Stockton (1824-1903), of Stockton's Valley, is not the same person as Lemuel Stockton (c.1822-c.1859) shown in the 1850 census living in Tuscaloosa, Tuscaloosa County, Alabama.

Lemuel Leroy Stockton's 1st wife was Rosannah Craig.

Irwin Cemetery is located on property that was granted to Thomas Stockton Sr. in 1798. He was the first settler in what would later become Clinton County, Kentucky, and Stockton's Valley is named after him. Thomas Stockton Sr. lived on his property next to Spring Creek until his death in 1809. This property then passed to his son Thomas Stockton Jr., and in 1824 he sold 128 1/2 acres of this 200 acre property to John Irwin. The Irwin Cemetery is located in the northwest corner of John Irwin's 128 1/2 acre property.
