Kermit R. Aase, 89, Brainerd, died Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2003, at Woodland Good Samaritan Village.
Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 9, 2003, at First Congregational United Church of Christ, Brainerd, with Pastor Deborah G. Celley officiating. Interment will be held at a later date.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Monday, Sept. 8, at Halvorson-Johnson Funeral Home, Brainerd.
Kermit was born July 25, 1914, in Kenyon, Minn., to Ole and Anna Aase. After graduating from high school in Kenyon, he went on to pitch for the University of Minnesota, playing on Minnesota's 1935 Big Ten Championship Team. After graduation, Kermit signed with the Washington Senators and pitched three years in the minor league system. He then returned to the U of M and completed his master's degree in Physical Education and Athletics. Kermit came to Brainerd in 1942 and taught physical education, coaching football and boys' basketball. He married Evelyn Williams on Aug. 20, 1944, in Byron, Minn. He started the Warriors' varsity baseball program in 1947 and remained head coach through 1972. He was the Warriors' athletic director for 30 years, retiring in 1982. In 1994, Kermit was inducted into the Minnesota State High School Coaches Association Hall of Fame. He was president of the Minnesota Coaches Association from 1956-1957. He also received the Brainerd Tower Award. Kermit enjoyed gardening and fishing and become known for his rose gardens. He was a member of the Brainerd Rotary Club, the Golden K's and the Nisswa Garden Club.
Kermit is survived by his wife, Evelyn; son Brian and Kay, Nisswa; daughter, Karen, Denver; a sister, Norma Huseth and a brother, Wallace Aase, both of Kenyon; and grandchildren Kelly Aase and Stacie Aase, both of Brainerd.
Kermit was preceded in death by his parents, one sister and three brothers.
Arrangements are with Halvorson-Johnson Funeral Home, Brainerd.
